Butler University recently confirmed the appointment of Will Patterson to lead its defensive line and coordinate its running game strategies. Patterson, an alumnus of Indiana University where he distinguished himself as a linebacker and team captain, transitions to this collegiate role following a six-year tenure at Lawrence Central. His ambition to eventually become a college head coach aligns with this significant career progression.
Coach Kevin Lynch expressed immense enthusiasm for Patterson's arrival, highlighting their two-decade-long acquaintance and Patterson's previous experience playing under Lynch's father, Bill Lynch, at Indiana. Lynch emphasized Patterson's exceptional leadership and mentorship qualities, foreseeing a profoundly positive influence on the student-athletes. The university anticipates Patterson will uphold Butler's esteemed values and contribute significantly as the 2026 season approaches.
Patterson's journey in football includes a distinguished playing career at Indiana University, where he was a four-year starter after graduating from Lawrence North. He earned All-Big Ten accolades and served as team captain in 2008 and 2009. Post-college, he briefly played professionally for the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent, followed by stints in the UFL with the Virginia Destroyers and in the Indoor Football League with the Iowa Barnstormers, further enriching his understanding of the game.
Before his successful period at Lawrence Central, Patterson also held the head coach position at Tech, where he earned the City Coach of the Year honor in 2019. His coaching career began as an assistant at Lawrence Central from 2013 to 2018. Academically, Patterson is furthering his education, currently pursuing a master's degree in education through Purdue University, underscoring his commitment to both athletic and intellectual development.
Patterson articulated his excitement about joining the Bulldog family, referencing his long-standing connection with the Lynch family. He looks forward to establishing a high standard of performance within the defensive group and eagerly anticipates the upcoming season at the Sellick Bowl. His extensive background as a player and coach, coupled with his dedication to excellence, positions him as a valuable addition to Butler's football program.
