Participating Organizations and Their Contributions

The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District, along with other groups and nonprofits, came together to make this event a success. 48 kids from PRJUSD were among those who came to pick up their brand new bikes. For some, it was the first bike they had ever owned. Stephanie Landgraf, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Captain, shared, "Every year, you witness that special moment when a child sees a bike for the first time. The sight of their smiles is truly heartwarming."Each child not only received a bike but also got fitted with a helmet. Public Health was on-site to assist with helmet fittings and sizing the bikes. Additionally, various organizations donated equipment and dedicated their time to train the incarcerated population.

Inmates' Role in Rebuilding and Distributing Bikes

Inmates at the Honor Farm spent the year learning how to rebuild and fix the bikes. Some of them then stepped forward to help distribute the bikes. As Landgraf explained, "They acquire job skills, form connections with the community, and learn the importance of giving back. Many of them leave with a sense of purpose and a better self-image."

The Impact on the Kids

The kids at the event were overjoyed. Tom Harrington, PRJUSD Director of Student Services, emphasized, "The kids just love it. Getting something new around the holidays is a special treat for them, and it benefits them in numerous ways. It gives them a sense of pride and a means of transportation to school with their friends." These bikes will not only be a source of fun but also a tool for building confidence and creating memories.
