Players and parents of players of the immensely popular Fortnite video game are on the verge of receiving payments. This comes as part of a significant settlement announced by the Federal Trade Commission. The scale of these payments is substantial, with an estimated 629,344 payments worth more than $72 million in total.

The payments related to in-game purchases that may not have been authorized will soon be sent out. Those who filed a valid claim before Oct. 8 will receive either a check or a PayPal payment. For those getting a check, it must be cashed within 90 days, and for PayPal payments, it must be accepted within 30 days of receipt. If you didn't apply by Oct. 8, you can still do so as the FTC is still reviewing claims and will send additional payments in the coming months.This settlement ensures that Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, now requires positive consent before charging users for content and can no longer lock players out of their accounts if they dispute an unauthorized charge.Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a settlement payment, several conditions must be met. You could have been charged in-game currency for items you didn't want between January 2017 and September 2022. Your child might have made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018. Or, your account could have been locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges.It's important to note that claims can only be filed by someone who is 18 years old or older. Parents will have to file claims related to their children's accounts. Claims can be filed on the Fortnite Refund website by Jan. 10, 2025. When applying, you will need a claim number emailed to the email linked to your Epic Games account or your Epic Account ID.Payment Options and Uncertainty
When eligible, you can choose to receive payment via check or PayPal. However, the amount you will receive is yet to be determined as several factors will influence the final payouts, including the number of people granted refunds."We expect to send additional payments in 2025 after we have reviewed and validated all claims," the FTC stated.
